- Objectives
- To learn basic sentence structures and vocabulary at the introductory level (L1-12)
and to develop basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. To acquire
command of Hiragana and Katakana. To study 50 Kanji required for JLPT N5
level. To be able to use basic Japanese. - Prerequisite
- No previous knowledge of the Japanese Language

- Evaluation
- Course will be completed if all the following requirements have been met:
1) Have attended more than 70% of classes; 2) Have completed the final exam. - Letter grades for the entire course will be assigned as follows:
A:100-80% B:79-65% C:64-50% F:49-0% - Makeup exams for midterm and final exams can be scheduled ONLY within one week after regular exams. Makeup exams will only be worth 80% of the possible score that can be attained through regular exams. No makeup will be offered for other quizzes.
- Course will be completed if all the following requirements have been met:

- Credits: 6 (courses may also be taken as noncredit courses)
- A course completion certificate will be given upon request to students who receive a letter grade of C or higher.
- Course schedules are based on the academic calendar of the School of Engineering.
- Missing more than 30 minutes of each class is considered as an absence. Arriving to class late or leaving class early 3 times will be regarded as one absence.
- The attendance of the first week will not be counted since it is an orientation week.
